Lotus
Scientifically known as Nelumbo Nucifera, the lotus has religious and cultural significance in many countries in South Asia. It is also a gorgeous symbol of healing, as each part of the plant can be used to boost bodily health. This post looks at the lotus seed, a functional food that contains the following bioactive elements:
- Flavinoids: powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits
- Polyphenols: antioxidants that can protect cells from damage caused by free radicals
- Alkaloids: can control the production of sebum (the body’s natural oils) and therefore combat acne
- Zinc compounds: essential nutrients that are great for problem skin
- Calcium: good for bones and teeth
In 1994, scientists from the University of California studied a lotus seed that was 1200 years old, found in a dry lakebed in northeastern China. Amazingly, the seed was germinated and is still growing! This demonstrates how powerful lotus seeds are.
Anti-ageing
Lotus seeds have the ability to help skin regenerate. In part, this is due to the potent enzyme L‑isoaspartyl methyltransferase which works to reinstate protein levels that have been impaired due to the ageing process.
The seeds also contain a flavonoid called kaempferol that has been shown to reduce collagen degradation and increase the protein levels that are required for a healthy skin.
Inflammation relief
A study carried out in 2013 suggests that lotus seeds could help reduce inflammation throughout the body.
It revealed that two polysaccharides in the seeds of red and white lotus varieties contain substantial anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and have the potential to be used as a base for future treatment.
Traditional uses
The lotus seed (and the rest of the plant) has a long history of use in traditional medicine practices, for treating many different ailments. Lotus seeds are renowned for their ability to restore vital force in the body, making them a great addition to any modern diet. This is why Qt Internal Cosmetics contain lotus seed powder, along with collagen and tremella for their powerful beautifying effects.
